There is no far-off land to explore, only here; an encounter with Palmer’s approach, seasons, and people. This territory may resonate with our imaginations, yet there is a tangible feeling that these scenes have been plucked from time. Perhaps it is the Impressionist sky, whose dense, quilted backdrop seems to have frozen all movement? Or the supernatural, golden light glinting off people’s faces? Or even the muted, smoky glow harmonizing with the green of the moss?
Patrick Swirc interprets the winegrower’s know-how in a series defined by sophistication, interplaying golden light and shadow, and meticulous detail. The ghostly silhouettes of recently cane-pruned vines seem to be waiting quietly. The poetry of these images highlights this moment suspended in time, caught between the lingering end of winter and the delicate arrival of spring.
“It is not the setting that determines the value of a portrait, nor the technique, nor the light. It is the direct, unflinching feelings, on both sides of the image.”
